Biography
Dr. Vani J Sabesan is a distinguished orthopedic surgeon with a strong academic career. She came to us here from the Cleveland Clinic Florida where she held the Lang Family Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Research and before that from Detroit, Michigan where she served as program director for the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program at Beaumont/Wayne State University. She is an associate professor in Orthopaedic Surgery with a subspecialty in Sports Medicine and Shoulder/Elbow surgery. Dr. Sabesan currently is a faculty member at FIU, FAU, Case Western Reserve, Ross Medical School, and Wayne State University. She is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with over 10 years experience and a leader in her field.
Dr. Sabesan received her undergraduate degree from Duke University, medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed her Orthopaedic surgery residency training at Duke University Medical Center. She received her fellowship training in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery/Sports Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, in addition to completing a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Iowa. Dr. Sabesan was a founding member of WMU Homer Stryker School of Medicine where she served as the chair of the musculoskeletal course at the medical school and co-chair of the next US Bone and Joint Initiative program to improve musculoskeletal education in medical schools. She has been an academic residency program faculty for over 10 years.
Dr. Sabesan is a young female leader in Orthopaedics and has served on a number of regional, national, and international committees and boards, including the Florida Orthopaedic Society Board, American Shoulder and Elbow Society Research and Advocacy committees, AAOS Shoulder and Elbow Committee, International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty Board, Michigan Orthopedic Society Board, Ruth Jackson Orthopedic Society (RJOS), Mid America Orthopaedic Society, and American Orthopedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leader’s program. Dr. Sabesan’s commitment to service extends beyond her role as female faculty member through her national work with Women’s Leadership programs, RJOS, and medical mission work. Dr. Sabesans’ contributions to the peer reviewed literature with over 75 publications demonstrates her continued commitment to excellence in clinical and biomechanical research specifically in the area of shoulder arthroplasty. She lectures both nationally and internationally in her area of expertise. Dr. Sabesan has received numerous honors including the Lang Family Chair in Orthopaedic Research, Young Investigator Grant recipient, Scholar of the year at CCF Florida, RJOS travelling fellowship, MidAmerica Orthopaedic Association traveling fellowship, OREF Clinician Scientist grant, American Orthopaedic Association’s Leadership Fellows Program, and awarded the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship.
