Biography

Professor Matthias A. Zumstein is a specialist in surgical orthopaedics and traumatology. He completed his undergraduate and graduate training at the University of Berne, Switzerland with the medical state examination and the award of his doctorate. In 2017 he was awarded the title of professor. Matthias Zumstein is currently Section Head of Shoulder, Elbow and Orthopaedic Sports Medicin at Orthopädie Sonnenhof. He is also Senior Consultant of the Departement of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, at the University hospital Inselspital in Berne. At the Inselspital Matthias Zumstein was Deputy Clinical Director from 2017 until 2019. He was responsible for the continuing education of orthopaedic residents and the orthopaedic training programme for medical students. Professor Zumstein is also an active member of Sportclinic #1, Bern. He continued his training as a specialist in shoulder, elbow and sports orthopaedics in Zurich and Berne, and as part of a clinical and scientific fellowship in shoulder and sports orthopaedics at the University Hospital in Nice, France, and a clinical fellowship in elbow and wrist surgery at the University Hospital in Adelaide, Australia. Professor Zumstein is an elected board member of the Swiss Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (swiss orthopaedics) and the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECEC/ESSSE). Professor Zumstein has an extensive research pedigree with more than 65 peer-reviewed publications, 15 book chapters, and more than 200 presentations at national and international congresses – including 100 invited presentations. He has received important awards, including two times winning the highest endowed scientific prize in shoulder surgery, the Neer Award of the Society of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ASES).
