Resident and fellow participation in Advanced Shoulder ArthroPlasty (ASAP) is critical to the long-term success of advancing the goals of the ASAP meeting. To further our mission, ASAP is sponsoring a research abstract scholarship competition for the 2024 ASAP meeting. This resident and fellow scholarship is in honor of Dr. Robert T. Burks, past Chairman for the Metcalf Meeting. Only current orthopaedic residents and fellows are eligible for submission. The topic should be primary or revision anatomic or reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Both clinical and basic science abstracts will be considered.
Dr. Robert T. Burks is a Professor of orthopedic surgery specializing sports medicine, specifically knee and shoulder surgery. Dr. Burks graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1978. He completed his orthopedic residency at the University of California at San Diego and subsequently did a sports medicine fellowship with Dr. Dale Daniel, MD, in 1983, in San Diego. From 1983 to 1986, Dr. Burks was in private practice in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1986 Dr. Burks moved to Wayne State University as the director of sports medicine. In the fall of 1988, he joined the University of Utah, Department of Orthopedics, and became head of sports medicine in 1992. The same year, he became co-chair of the Metcalf Meeting following the passing of Dr. Robert Metcalf. It was the largest continual running arthroscopy meeting in the world and attracted faculty and attendees from all over. From 2004 until 2017, he served as the sole chairman of the meeting. After the Metcalf meeting ended its run in 2017, Dr. Burks provided invaluable advice to our co-directors and encouraged them to develop a meeting focused solely on shoulder arthroplasty, which led to the first ASAP Meeting in 2019. As the curator of the Metcalf Meeting for over 25 years, he provided guidance in transitioning from the Metcalf Meeting to the ASAP meeting in its current form and we continue to be grateful for his support and leadership.
The 2026 deadline for submissions will be November 17, 2025.
Scholarship winners will be notified via email by December 8, 2025.
